"Joshua Wilton came south after the war, opened a foundry and a hardware business, and brought electricity to Harrisonburg, current population about 35,000. Around 1888, he built a solid brick house with a turret porch and gingerbread trim. He wanted the best-16 inch thick walls, heavy oak doors, parquet floors, leaded glass and tall bay windows. Today, one hundred years later, his portrait hangs over the mantel in what is now the lounge of a beautiful inn. Joshua Wilton would be proud to preside here, for the room is quite grand with its deep green walls, maroon leather armchairs and oak paneled bar. Its new owners coaxed and caressed the place back to the opulence that Wilton himself insisted on...Every little touch is perfect, from the lace curtains, to the watercolors by local artists. ...terrific salads, breads and desserts, including an arrangement of lettuces topped with a goat cheese cake and a luscious creme brulee so ethereal it could steal a Frenchman's allegiance."

The Sunday New York Times
"The Joshua Wilton House... is a superb small inn and restaurant...The five bedrooms in this restored Victorian come with private bath and full breakfast. The restaurant is open to non-guests as well...roasted breast of duck and grilled stuffed pork tenderloin are highly recommended."
Richmond Times-Dispatch
"Harrisonburg-You can find lots of reasons to visit this Shenandoah Valley town. In the winter, it may be the ski slopes of nearby Massanutten mountain. In the spring, it may be shopping for antiques along Route 11. In the summer, it could be taking in the Civil War history that fills the valley. In the fall, there are the glorious colors of nearby Skyline Drive...But the newest and the best reason to visit Harrisonburg in any season is the culinary delights available at the Joshua Wilton House, an inn that features one of the best restaurants in Virginia."

The Harrisonburg Daily News-Record
"What diners look for and find in a gourmet restaurant in the Shenandoah Valley is, in most respects, the same as that for a comparable big metropolitan spot. But one difference, is that customers in Harrisonburg eat harvest from farms very close by."

A Study in Comfort
From Southern Living

"Once a college frat house, The Joshua Wilton House has graduated to a grown-up life.  It’s an elegant bed-and-breakfast and restaurant now.  Sitting on the inn’s front porch on a sunny Virginia afternoon is almost as nice as being back in college

. James Madison University stands just down the street in Harrisonburg.  On most evenings, there are enough professors and their families dining in the restaurant to hold a faculty meeting.  Many travelers find their way here too.

“We’re right in the middle of the Shenandoah Valley,” says manager Rick James.  “So we have a lot of the same people coming back on their way through he valley in the spring and fall.  We’re their break from the road, a pleasant place to stay and have dinner.”

Joshua Wilton came south from Canada and built this sturdy brick house in 1888.  he ran a hardware business and foundry and brought electricity to town.  His portrait hangs over the mantel in the lounge.

Even guests staying at other places head to The Joshua Wilton House for dinner.  Chef Mark Newsome is well known for his creative treatment of game, seafood, and standard dishes.  For dessert, treat yourself to the signature crème brûlée.
College was never as cushy as a stay at this comfortable inn.  The Joshua Wilton House is in a class by itself."
